French food relies heavily on local products and anything that can be sourced locally. Of course, it’s a well known fact that wine and cheese are used a lot in French cooking but chicken, beef, lamb and veal are also very popular. Garlic, mushrooms, leeks, berries and other fresh produce are also used a lot. The specific dishes served in France do vary slightly depending on the region. For example, Southern France serves a lot of duck and Northern France serves a lot of pork. Similarly, Southern French cuisine tends to include a lot of ingredients taken from Mediterranean neighbours, whereas Northern France has more potato and dairy based dishes.
